Updates are critical for the continued utility and security of any computer system or program. That said, updates aren’t always perfect. It’s possible that even a routine update could sideline your critical applications. If this happens, you’re dealing with downtime and failing to serve your customers… all because you were trying to do the right thing and maintain your technology.
Make no mistake: updates are crucial, so to make sure they don’t disrupt your business, they need to be approached with strategy and discipline.
Your business’ IT network is interconnected by design. Your operating system empowers your software; your storage depends on your database drivers, and so on. This interconnectivity gives your IT stability. However, this interconnectivity also means that any changes you make—such as an update, for instance—can have impacts that reach beyond what you intend.
In short, an update can just as easily create a new problem as it can solve an existing one, leaving you with an even bigger mess.
That said, it isn’t as though you can simply skip all updates to your business’ technology solutions. That’s even more risky, as many updates shore up vulnerabilities and bugs that would otherwise cause serious problems for your business. It can feel like a catch-22… but it doesn’t have to.
These kinds of issues can feel like a row of dominoes, one falling after the other. The key is to keep these dominoes upright. We do so through a tested process, broken into three steps:
Before we apply any patch, we rigorously test it in isolation to ensure that it won’t negatively impact your operations. This helps us catch issues and determine how well a change will work for you without risking your actual productivity.
We also work with you to determine the times when applying a patch will have the least impact on your workplace processes, and do so then. These scheduled windows allow us to ensure everything is done properly without inconveniencing your team.
Once your new technology is implemented, we confirm that everything is operating as expected… and if it isn’t, we can quickly revert the change and return you to your prior state of operations.
We work with businesses around Calgary to keep their IT working for them, partnering with them to deliver the greatest benefit. We’ll take the role of your business’ CTO, allowing you to focus on using the tools we manage to their fullest potential.
